GENERAL SPRAY TAN FAQ
IS AIRBRUSH TANNING DONE BY A MACHINE OR AN ACTUAL PERSON?
Airbrush tans at Glo are done by a licensed esthetician, not a machine.
HOW LONG DOES THE SPRAY TAN APPOINTMENT TAKE?
Your first appointment at Glo will take about 30 mins. start to finish. We have you fill out an intake and release form and we thoroughly go over our spray tan process. Subsequent appointments take about 15 – 20 mins.
DO YOU ONLY SPRAY WOMEN OR ARE MEN ALLOWED TO GET SPRAYED TOO?
Men are most certainly allowed to come get sprayed. However, Glo does not provide spray tan disposable undergarments for men, therefore, it is encouraged that each man brings his own undergarment to get sprayed in.
WHAT IS ORGANIC SPRAY TAN TANNING OR SUNLESS TANNING?
Organic sunless spray tanning is the mist application of an organic spray tanning solution to desired areas of the body. When applied, dihydroxyacetone, DHA, (the active ingredient in sunless tanning solution) reacts with the proteins on the skin’s superficial (outermost) layer to form a golden brown color. Your skin begins to darken and reaches its peak color within a few hours. The color will gradually fade through the skin’s natural shedding/exfoliation process, just like a tan from the sun.
HOW LONG DOES AN ORGANIC SPRAY TAN LAST?
An organic spray tan generally lasts approximately 5-10 days (even longer for some), depending on what the spray tan is subjected to through a person’s lifestyle, how often that person is showering, shaving, and exfoliating, products used at home, aftercare diligence, and the condition of a person’s skin. Preparing your skin properly for your organic spray tan application is an important factor relating to your spray tan’s results and longevity. Keep in mind many over-the-counter drug store products, exercise and sweating, skin conditions and hormones may create uneven post-tan fading. Spray tan results vary.
HOW LONG DOES AN ORGANIC SPRAY TAN APPOINTMENT TAKE?
If this is your first organic spray tan appointment at Glo Boise, it’s best to plan for 30 minutes out of your day’s schedule. Custom spray tans with one of our licensed estheticians last no more than 15 – 20 minutes including spraying and drying time. At Glo Boise, we spend extra time educating our clients about the organic spray tanning process and proper aftercare so each client can get the most out of his/her organic spray tan. Once you are familiar with our spray tanning process, an appointment can take as little as 15 -20 minutes time from start-to-finish. You’re in, out, and on your way with a gorgeous glo.
HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR MY SUNLESS SPRAY TANNING SESSION?
Shower, shave, and exfoliate (do not exfoliate with oil-based sugar or salt scrubs), prior to your spray tan session. Refrain from using moisturizers, perfumes, lotions, oils or deodorants that may create a barrier between the skin and the organic sunless tanning solution. You may resume using these products after your first post-tan shower.
CAN I CHOOSE HOW TAN I’D LIKE TO BE?
Yes. In order to help you achieve the best organic sunless tanning color results possible, one of our licensed estheticians will evaluate your skin’s undertones and appropriately select the sunless tanning solution that will best match and complement your skin tone/skin type. From there he/she will then consult with you to find out the level of tan you’d like to achieve: light, medium, dark, or extra dark.
HOW LONG SHOULD I WAIT AFTER A SESSION BEFORE SHOWERING?
For optimal results, and to allow the DHA enough time to fully set, it is recommended to wait 8 -12 hours before resuming a showering routine. Showering sooner than the recommended critical setting time can and most likely will diminish the results and longevity of your spray tan.
HOW DO I CARE FOR MY SPRAY TAN?
Immediately after your spray tan:
- Wipe off the palms of your hands with a baby wipe.
- Use a fan, blow dryer or air hose to accelerate drying of your skin.
- Wait about 5 minutes before getting dressed.
- Place a towel over your driver’s seat for your car ride home.
8 – 12 hours after your spray tan:
- Avoid any activity that would cause sweating; exercise, cleaning, or showering, as your spray tan is developing during these hours. Contact with water or sweat could result in streaking or uneven tanning.
- If you overnight in your spray tan, please cover your bed with dark sheets and pillow cases so that any bronzer does not rub-off or have a chance to stain your regular sheets.
12+ hours after your spray tan:
- Take a brief warm shower (instead of a long hot shower). You will see some bronzer wash away from your skin. This is completely normal. Do not be alarmed, your developed tan will still remain.
- Wash with a mild, moisturizing shower gel, such as our tan-extending Shower Glow™ DHA-Infused Body Wash.
- While you are drying, remember to gently pat your skin dry, do not rub your skin as a towel can be very exfoliating and can decrease the longevity of your tan.
- Drink plenty of water and apply a moisturizer such as our Skin Glow Light Tan Extender or Velvet Soft Moisturizing Crème in the morning and evening to keep skin hydrated, and glowing.
WILL MY SPRAY TAN STAIN OTHER FABRIC MATERIALS?
The short answer is, No. Until you take your first post-tan shower, the bronzer can rub off and transfer onto other materials, fabrics, and even people; but the bronzer is not likely to stain after washing in cold or warm water as the bronzer is water-soluble.
Rub-off most often occurs when increased body heat/temperature, friction, chaffing, and sweating/perspiration are present. If you sleep in a hot room or under a heavy duvet that causes you to sweat you are likely to transfer the bronzer on to your bed sheets. Adjust the temperature settings of your room accordingly. During hot summer months we encourage clients to lay an old towel down on top of their car seat to act as barrier between your car seat’s material and your spray tan. It is not recommended you part-take in activities that will trigger sweating the perspiration during the critical 8-12 hour setting-time of after you have received a spray tan and before you have taken your first post-tan shower.
In relation to the cosmetic bronzer topic, never judge your spray tan results until AFTER your first shower. Bronzers can smudge sometimes but it does not necessarily mean your spray tan results were affected.
ARE THERE WAYS TO ENHANCE THE SUNLESS SPRAY TANNING RESULTS?
Yes, all of Glo Boise’s retail aftercare products are created to enhance and extend organic spray tanning results. Over-the-counter drug store products are not specifically formulated to be used in conjunction with the organic sunless tanning solution we use. By not using our line of aftercare products, you risk that other products may block the tan’s application, impede the development process, and create uneven post-tan fading.
Ask your Glo Boise spa professional about our complete line of take-home aftercare sunless tanning products to enhance and extend the life of your organic spray tan.
WILL SWIMMING AFFECT MY TAN?
Swimming in chemically treated hot tubs and pools (saline included) can fade the spray tan, cause possible streaking, and will decrease the longevity of your tan.
I AM PREGNANT AND/OR NURSING, CAN I STILL RECEIVE AN ORGANIC SPRAY TAN?
If you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant, are trying to get pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding, Glo Boise recommends that you first consult with your physician and get permission from your doctor before electing to receive an organic spray tan.
The concern some doctors have about spray tanning while pregnant and/or nursing is over whether or not the active ingredient (DHA) is able to enter the blood stream. The indications are that it cannot enter the blood stream as DHA only interacts with the outermost layer of the skin. DHA has been used as a cosmetic ingredient in the United States since 1960 and no problems have ever been reported concerning DHA penetrating the skin. However, we want to reiterate again, it is Glo Boise’s stance that all clients are to receive permission from their physician before choosing to receive an organic spray tan.
Furthermore, the FDA has approved spray tanning for external use only and recommends avoiding exposure to mucous membranes, inhalation and ingestion. Glo Boise recommends regardless of pregnancy, that you protect yourself against incident ingestion by utilizing all of the protective wear we have on hand. We provide protective eye-wear, filtered nose plugs, disposable facial masks, bras, and thongs to all of our spray tanning clients. In addition, Glo Boise recommends clients do not opt to spray tan nude or topless if they are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Our spray tan room is equipped filtered over spray fans, a ventilation system, and has a door to the outside that can be propped open to air out the room.
WILL SPRAY TANNING FADE MY TATTOOS OR DISCOLOR THEM?
No, unless your tattoo is brand new and the pores of your skin are still open. In which case, the sunless tanning solution could affect the results of your tattoo. If your tattoo is still healing, it is recommended to wait until your tattoo is fully healed to receive a spray tan.
If you tattoo is fully healed, over the duration of the spray tan, your tattoo’s colors might look different from what they usually look like. This is due to the fact a spray tan interacts with the dead skin cells on the outermost layer of your skin and DHA interacting with those proteins to temporarily darken the skin. As a result, your tattoo colors might not appear as vibrant or your tattoo might appear darker. Once the spray tan fades the tattoo should go back to being the same color and intensity as it was prior to receiving a spray tan.
WHAT IS THE ADVANTAGE OF SUNLESS TANNING OVER TRADITIONAL UV TANNING (indoor and outdoor)?
Spray tanning does not have the potential to give you melanoma, wrinkles, age spots, moles, freckles, or sunspots. People with sensitive skin or people who have a hard time tanning (be it indoor or outdoor tanning) will find sunless tanning is preferred and gentle. One application with spray tanning is approximately equivalent to approximately 6 tanning bed sessions, thereby making it a cost effective and healthy alternative to indoor and outdoor UV tanning.
WHAT IS DHA?
The active ingredient most often used in all sunless tanners including tinted moisturizers, self-tanners, and spray tan solution is called DHA or dihydroxyacetone. DHA is a carbohydrate (monosaccharide sugar) compound approved by the FDA for use in externally applied sunless tanning solutions. For misting applications, the FDA recommends protective measures to prevent eye contact, inhalation or ingestion. DHA is often derived from a vegetable source like beets or sugar cane. Its properties as a skin darkener were discovered in the 1920s but weren’t marketed as such until the 1960s, then added to the FDA’s list of approved colors for cosmetic products in the 1970s.
WHAT IS ECO-CERT ORGANIC DHA?
There is a wide range in quality when it comes to ingredients and manufacturing in the skin care/cosmetic industry. Ecocert is an internationally recognized certification that guarantees the highest standards are met during the creation of formulas, manufacturing, filling and packaging. Ecocert was the very first certification body to develop standards for natural and organic cosmetics. Ecocert approved DHA is the highest and finest quality of DHA available. Glo Boise’s sunless spray tanning solutions all contain Ecocert approved DHA and organic aloe.
HAS ANYONE HAD AN ALLERGIC REACTION TO DHA?
Yes. If you’ve had previous allergic reactions to self-tanning lotions or cosmetics, you should consult a health care professional before choosing to spray tan.
IS SUNLESS SPRAY TANNING SOLUTION RECOMMENDED FOR PEOPLE WITH SKIN SENSITIVITIES OR ALLERGIES?
This product is safe, however, for those with skin sensitivities or allergies, it is recommended to consult a health care professional before electing to receive an organic spray tan.
IS THE DHA IN SUNLESS SPRAY TANNING SOLUTION SAFE TO USE?
The FDA has approved DHA for external application to the skin. For misting applications, the FDA recommends protective measures to prevent eye contact, inhalation or ingestion. To ensure complete protection, the FDA suggests wearing protective eye-wear, nose filters, ear plugs, lip balm, and undergarments. Glo Boise provides all of the FDA recommended protective gear in order minimize incidental ingestion.
WHAT HAPPENS IF SUNLESS SPRAY TANNING SOLUTION GETS IN THE EYES?
FDA recommends that DHA not be used in the eyes or surrounding area. Protective eye-wear is recommended and is provided by Glo Boise. If eyes feel irritated, gently splash with water. For additional questions or if irritation persists, consult a health care professional.
WHAT HAPPENS IF SUNLESS SPRAY TANNING SOLUTION IS INHALED?
The FDA recommends that DHA not be inhaled. Nose filters and/or disposable facial masks that protect the nose and mouth are recommended. Glo Boise provides both filtered nose plugs and disposable protective facial masks. For additional questions or if irritation persists, consult a health care professional.
WHAT IS THE SUNLESS SPRAY TAN (DHA) ADVISORY?
The FDA (and Glo Boise) advises that users avoid inhaling or ingesting DHA or letting the spray get into the eyes. When using DHA-containing products as an all-over spray or mist, it may be difficult to avoid exposure in a manner for which DHA is not approved, including the area of the eyes, lips, or mucous membrane, or internally. The FDA recommends protective measures to eliminate eye contact, inhalation or ingestion during a spray tan session, such as:
- Eye protection
- Nose filters
- Ear plugs
- Lip balm
For additional questions or concerns regarding DHA, consult a health care professional or the FDA web site.
